about

February 29, 1984, Year of the Rat:

Nena tops the charts with ‘99 Red Balloons’, an anthemic meditation on the senselessness of war.

Progressive Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau announces he will shortly retire.

Gentlemanly actor and screen idol Roland Culver dies of heart problems.

Rioting English football fans are condemned for the damage at Paris’s Parc des Princes Stadium following a 2-0 defeat the previous night.

Just before the witching hour, somewhere in Newcastle, unemployed 18-year-old Daniel calls a popular late night phone-in show to complain about the elderly…

Daniel’s grievances are many.

He claims the elderly are getting “loads of money” from society – via bus passes, cinema reductions, discounts – with very little understanding of how a pension scheme actually works.

His inflammatory comments are carefully handled, one by one, by the show’s host, who describes them as ‘monstrous’, but is powerless to stop Daniel’s suggestion that pensioners should do community work.

Listener response is both deafening and unequivocal:

“I would have liked to have kicked him. I think that’s what he needs,” says Kate with an air of calm.

“He wants to get the nappies off his backside before he talks to the likes of me” adds Hilda, invoking Ronald Reagan and some blunt razorblades.

Anonymous is more succinct: “I would love to meet that youth… because I don’t think he’d be alive the next day.”

Recorded by accident and only recently rediscovered at the bottom of a box, the occasionally muffled God Help Britain crackles with generational tension and has to be heard to be believed.

And while it’s a necessarily difficult listen, for one unlucky caller, the surrounding furore means their Ladies’ Privilege proposal comes minutes too late…
